Department of English

Department of English

The Department of English of Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya was established in 2013 with a vision to provide quality instruction in English language and literature to students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds. Being located in the southernmost part of West Bengal, the college largely serves students who are first-generation learners. These students, though enthusiastic and motivated, often face linguistic and socio-economic barriers in pursuing English as a subject.

In this context, the Department of English plays a crucial role not only in equipping students with the required academic knowledge but also in helping them develop confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities. At present, the department caters to students under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, offering:

  • English as Minor/CC subject in the 3-Year MDC course
  • IDC (Interdisciplinary Courses)
  • AEC (both Compulsory English and Alternative English)

By adopting student-friendly teaching practices, contextualized learning materials, and modern pedagogical methods, the department ensures that English is not merely a subject to be passed, but a tool for personal growth, empowerment, and wider career opportunities.
