Department of Zoology
Department Overview
The college, established in 2013 and affiliated with the University of Calcutta, offers Zoology as a General course under the B.Sc. stream. It is part of the Science faculty, alongside Botany and Chemistry.
Importance of Zoology
Zoology is a core biological science focused on animal life, structure, function, behavior, ecology, and evolution. Studying Zoology helps students:
- Understand biodiversity and ecosystems, including local species of coastal and mangrove regions like Namkhana.
- Develop research and analytical skills through hands-on lab, fieldwork, and observational studies.
- Prepare for diverse careers in wildlife biology, conservation, environmental management, health sciences, education, and more.

Departmental Mission
Although the college's official mission covers all departments, here are key elements tailored to the Zoology program:
- Inclusive education for students from economically disadvantaged and rural backgrounds.
- A holistic student development approach, emphasizing personality, discipline, environmental awareness, and social responsibility.
- Skill-building and employability: The mission highlights student-centric learning and preparation for competitive job markets.
- Through Zoology, students can expect local/regional field studies (e.g., coastal biodiversity, mangrove ecosystems), aligning with the college's goals of regional relevance and community engagement.
Departmental Vision
To emerge as a centre of excellence in zoological education and research, fostering curiosity, scientific temperament, and environmental stewardship among students. We aim to inspire future biologists who will contribute to biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and the understanding of life in all its forms — guided by ethics, inclusivity, and a commitment to societal well-being.
