Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science of Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya began its academic journey alongside the establishment of the college on 26 February 2013, with the introduction of the Political Science General Course under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta (granted on 29 July 2013). Within a short span, the department expanded its academic horizon by introducing the Political Science Honours Course on 29 August 2015, marking a new milestone in the growth of the institution.

Since its inception, the department has been deeply committed to academic excellence, critical inquiry, and value-based education. It strives to develop a comprehensive understanding of political structures, ideologies, institutions, and governance processes among students. The department combines theoretical instruction with practical exposure—encouraging research, discussions, field studies, and participation in civic-oriented activities.

At present, it offers Undergraduate Honours and General programmes, following the University of Calcutta curriculum. Until 2024, the department followed the CBCS-based 3-year system (Semester I–VI) and, from 2023 onwards, has adopted the NEP-guided Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), introducing both 3-year and 4-year research-based Major and Minor degree programmes.

The Mahavidyalaya is located in a semi-urban agricultural region, and most students come from rural and economically modest backgrounds. This socio-economic reality motivates the department to offer inclusive education and personalized guidance, helping students realize their full potential. The department remains steadfast in its mission to promote intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility, and social awareness among learners.

Currently, the department operates with one full-time teacher, one State Aided College Teacher (SACT), and three guest faculty members, all of whom are dedicated to maintaining academic rigor and supporting the holistic development of students through continuous mentoring and co-curricular engagement.
